November: Ending Poverty

Monday, November 7th

As we move from October and talking about empathy into the month of November and Thanksgiving, the concept of poverty and ending poverty in our community comes to the fore front. The issue of ending poverty is emphasized due to the election happening tomorrow.

Our state will be voting on whether or not to raise the minimum wage. We will begin to look at the concept of poverty through the minimum wage issue. One pair in your team will read an Article about minimum wage and the other will read the amendment analysis from this year’s blue book. (A blue book is an analysis of every measure being voted on in your area). Then, you will share  a summary of what you read to your team.

Now, take the knowledge you have gained today to take a stance on the amendment. Would you vote for or against Amendment 70 and why? Write an ACES paragraph to communicate your answer.

Today, we are going to look at the election results of Amendment 70.  Reflect verbally as a team and discuss the following questions: did the amendment pass? Why do you think that is? do you think it is important to be knowledgeable to participate in an election, why or why not? Who does raising the minimum wage affect?

Watch “The Gap”

YouTube Video

The person in the video describes how they lose assistance from the government as they make more money. Let’s think about this in terms of the minimum wage. Wages increase, but as they do, benefits and assistance decrease faster.

What incentive does someone have to make more money if they lose “spending power” and possibly basic necessities?

Now let’s think about this in terms of being knowledgeable. Now that you have more knowledge of how someone living in poverty is affected by higher wages, do you feel the same way about raising the minimum wage? What more knowledge could you gain?

On Monday, you looked at one person’s experience living in poverty. With your team discuss: do you think you should be knowledgeable about poverty in your own community? Why or why not?

Welcome back from the Thanksgiving Holiday! This week we are going to talk about gratitude. Gratitude is all about acknowledging the people and things we have in our lives. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the school community for some of the amazing things we have been able to do this year!

Go through the presentation with your teacher in advisory class. Then discuss with your team, what are you grateful for this year and why?

Then, you will contribute a half page visual of what you are grateful for. Using visuals, quotes from others, or your own personal expression, share what you are thankful for. When everyone in your class has drawn or written what they are grateful for on their paper, put them together in a book for your class. What a great time of year to document the things that mean the most to us!

Take today and Wednesday to complete your class book of gratitude.

Wednesday, November 30th

Today, finish up your gratitude books, make sure to take your time and do your best!
